How to reduce energy consumption in digital signage displays

As the network grows, displays that stay on all day in branches, stores and offices become a significant energy cost. Reducing consumption doesn't require switching the displays off; the right display choice and the right playout plan are usually enough.

1. Choose displays suited to the operating hours

Professional displays are classified by daily operating hours: 16/7 displays are designed for business hours, and 24/7 displays for continuous use. There's no need to put a 24/7 display at a point that is only on during business hours; the right class balances both the investment and the consumption.

2. Switch displays off outside business hours

Most professional displays can be switched on and off with a timer. Putting displays into sleep mode when the store is closed eliminates the energy wasted overnight. For example, Samsung's professional displays consume around 0.5 W in sleep mode. On/off times are managed centrally together with the playout plan.

3. Adjust brightness to the environment

A display that is brighter than necessary indoors both tires the eyes and wastes energy. Displays with an ambient light sensor adjust their brightness automatically. For suitable brightness values, see our brightness guide.

4. Choose efficient series

Some manufacturers offer series that focus on energy efficiency. The Philips 3000 Series QE-Line is designed to run on roughly half the energy of similar models and has earned EPEAT Climate+ Gold. The ViewSonic ViewBoard IFP51 series holds EPEAT Gold and ENERGY STAR certifications. Values are taken from the manufacturers' technical specifications.

5. Use e-paper for static content

For content that doesn't change often, such as posters, wayfinding and menus, color e-paper displays are worth considering. E-paper uses energy only when the image changes and can run on battery.

6. Take content into account too

Content with dark backgrounds consumes less energy, especially on OLED and LED displays. Making this choice in content design reduces consumption without sacrificing visibility.

Summary

With the right operating class, switching off outside business hours, brightness suited to the environment and efficient display series, energy consumption can be reduced significantly.
